In the mid-80s, the Bavarian automotive brand wanted to compete in Group A touring car series, however, they could only compete in a car that had at least 5,000 production cars. To qualify, they built a homologation special based on their compact coupe stuffed with a motorsport derived 4 cylinder engine.
This started a niche of cars that have become a cult for many car enthusiasts. It meant that car enthusiasts could drive a sensible sedan or coupe that could be driven daily with performance figures that can keep up with cars that are solely performance oriented.
The Six Speed Dials Bavarian F8X timepiece is inspired by the dial instruments of the modern day version of the original Group A homologation racer. At first glance beneath the flat sapphire crystal glass is a single layer light grey dial with a black trapezoidal area on the bottom where the logo is placed. The F8X series vehicles have a digital rev limiter that increases as the car warms up to operating temperature. When the vehicle is cold, there are orange lights on the outside to the tachometer to inform the driver that the engine isn’t warm enough for the driver to extract every ounce of power from it however, as the engine warms up the orange lights go away and what remains are two red lights and an orange light indicating the redline. The timepiece has a similar red and orange markers on the edge of the dial. The red hour and minute hands are a clean contrast between the light grey dial that helps the driver read time easier. The hour and minute hands feature a luminescent feature that is charged by direct sunlight so that you can time even when the sun goes down. The timepiece is powered by a 21- jewel Japanese Miyota automatic movement with a stainless steel case back with a stamped Six Speed Dials logo.
